According to Wikipedia, Anna University is a nationally ranked Top Engineering University in India. Its main campus located in Guindy, Chennai. It was named after C N Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in September 1978. Currently, Anna University has 4 engineering colleges in its umbrella: College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) and School of Architecture and Planning (SAP). CEG goes through the common Anna University admission procedure. There are mainly three ways:

1. Eligibility criteria for applying through TNEA 2017: The candidate should be a native of Tamil Nadu state to be eligible to apply. The out-state candidates who have done their schooling from Tamil Nadu can also apply. The children of persons who have been serving in Public sector or government sector for the last five years in Tamil Nadu may also apply for TNEA 2017.

2. Besides that, the candidates must have passed the 12th/HSC in 2017 or its equivalent examination from the government recognised board with the subjects as Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry with the percentage as 50% and SC/ST categories students required to secure only 45% marks.

CEG is setup in the main campus of Anna University in Guindy, Chennai. Guindy is one of the most important neighborhoods in Chennai. Students particularly complain about the Computer Labs but it is said to be getting better too. Hence, this should go in your ‘Things to Check Before Finalizing’ list especially if you are in the Computer Engineering Department. You’ll find an okay-okay Wifi everywhere on the campus and in the Hostel. Students are not as happy with the Hostel facilities. The Hostel Curfew time is 9 PM. Food is cheaper and better in the canteen compared to the Hostel mess. The Library lacks an electronic subscription system while the physical books collection has been generally appreciated.

How is the faculty and course at CEG? Who is the most popular professor?

College of Engineering, Guindy has been ranked as the 48th best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015. Most students find the faculty to be good. A lot of them are Ph.D. holders and it is said that these professors don’t spoon feed you. You must trust their knowledge and display your own interest in the subject to move ahead. Engineering course at CEG are Biomedical Engineering, Geo Informatics, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural and Irrigation Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Printing Technology, Mining Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering. The faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) is said to be the best out of all. Overall, the faculty of core branches like Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering are better than the newer branches. Furthermore, the students say that with the student id around your neck, you can even approach the Dean for a serious issue with ease.

How strict is the attendance policy? How rigorous is the study?

Assuming that you want to go to this college to study, it will not be very tough. Students need to compulsorily have 75% attendance to appear for exams. Formals are compulsory during lab sessions that happen twice a week. You must wear your Student id card at all time. The class timings are not rigid as 9 to 5. It depends on the number of credits you have taken for a particular semester. A semester of 30 credits means 30 hours a week. So some days you could be on your own and other days you’d be busy with lectures and labs all day. Nevertheless, CEGians manage to steal some fun at the labs fun at the labs.

The fee for the B.E. Engineering course in CEG is Rs. 1,17,000 for 4 years excluding Hostel Fees which is Rs. 15000 per semester (Checkout CEG, Guindy Fees 2016-2017).
